Aluminum pillars used between the rifle receiver and the floorplate that keep the stock from compressing when tightening the front and rear guard screws.

Pillar bedding eliminated the compression effects from wood stocks that shrunk and swelled. Pillar bedding is performed by inserting aluminum pillars, or sleeves, into the stock between the barreled action and the bottom metal, so when you apply 65 in.-lbs. of torque to the action screws, it will tighten up against the pillars with the same tension every time. Indeed, it was the inherent instability of wood that led to the development of the fiberglass rifle stock.
